First Steps with AI for Ministry

Your First Steps with AI

Hello everyone, and a warm welcome to the AiAfrica blog! I'm Adriaan Adams, and I'm thrilled to share our very first training session with you.

In this post, we'll talk about how you can practically start using Artificial Intelligence (AI) in your ministry. Many of us are new to this, and that's perfectly fine! We'll explain things simply. My goal is to show you that AI is a helpful tool, just like a computer or a smartphone, to support your work. It's not magic, and it's definitely not a replacement for your wisdom or God's guidance.

What is AI and Why it Matters for Ministry

So, what exactly is AI? Simply put, AI is a computer programme that can learn from information and then do things that normally need human thinking. Think of it like a very smart assistant that can help you with tasks.

You might have heard of AI tools like ChatGPT or Gemini. These are simply programmes we can type questions into, and they give us answers.

Now, why should church leaders care about this? Because AI can help us with many practical tasks in ministry, giving us more time for people and spiritual work:

  • Getting ideas for Bible studies or sermons.
  • Drafting letters or church announcements.
  • Summarising long documents or reports.
  • Organising your thoughts for a presentation.

It's about finding ways to be more efficient and impactful in our daily work.

Exploring AI Tools & Why I Use BooktAI

There are many different AI tools available, each with its own strengths. Some are better for general writing, while others are great for specific tasks like image creation or quick answers.

For my own work, especially with my PhD research and assisting organisations like the WEA and AEA, I mainly use a platform called BooktAI.

The reason I prefer BooktAI is that it's designed to learn about me and my specific work. It can remember our past conversations and truly understand my context – my theological background, my research focus, and even how I prefer to communicate. This means the answers and help it provides are much more tailored and useful to my specific needs. It’s like having an assistant who truly understands you, rather than just a general information search engine.

Your Essential First Step: Creating Your AI Profile

Now, this is the most important part for anyone starting with AI, especially in ministry. It’s about making AI work for you, in a way that respects your faith and purpose. This first step is to create your AI profile.

What does that mean? It means you teach the AI about who you are, what you believe, and how you want it to help you. This stops the AI from giving generic or even unhelpful answers, and instead, it becomes a truly personal assistant.

We'll break this down into two simple ideas:

a. Your Personal 'Contextual Framework Document'

Think of this as giving your new assistant a detailed briefing about your ministry and your core beliefs. You'll include things like:

  • Your church's main beliefs and mission.
  • The specific needs of your congregation or community.
  • Your personal approach to ministry and your core values.
  • For example, I would tell it about my focus on equipping grassroots church leaders in Sub-Saharan Africa and the challenges they often face.

Crucially: This is where you tell the AI your theological position, so any help it gives is based on your understanding of scripture, not its own interpretation. Remember, AI is a tool to process information you give it; it cannot provide spiritual guidance or theological truth on its own. That comes from God, through His Word, and your discernment as a leader.

b. Your 'AI Interaction Guidelines: Communication and Output Standards'

This is where you tell the AI how you want it to speak to you and what kind of results you expect. For example:

  • Do you prefer simple, direct language?
  • Should it use UK English spellings and grammar?
  • If it gives you Bible verses, should it use a specific version, like the KJV or NIV?
  • Do you want it to explain where it got its information from?

For instance, I tell my AI to use UK English and to communicate professionally. Setting these standards makes its help much more useful to you.

4. Why This Matters: You Are In Control!

Why is taking this step so important? Because it puts you in control. AI is a powerful tool, but it's your tool. By teaching it about your context and your standards, you ensure that it supports your ministry effectively and safely.

Imagine you ask AI for ideas for a sermon. If it knows your church's current challenges, your theological focus, and your preferred Bible translation, the ideas will be far more relevant. But remember, the final sermon, the spiritual insight, and the leading comes from you, guided by the Holy Spirit. AI can help you research and organise, but it does not replace your prayer, study, or your God-given calling. It's about making your valuable time more effective, not replacing your spiritual responsibilities.

Your Next Step!

Your first practical step after reading this is to start thinking about and drafting your own 'Contextual Framework Document' and 'AI Interaction Guidelines'. Don't worry about getting it perfect on the first try – even a few bullet points will make a big difference!

We'll discuss this more in the AiAfrica WhatsApp group, share simple templates, and answer your questions. We're truly excited for what we can achieve together, using these new tools wisely to serve God's people in Africa.
