The arrival of Artificial Intelligence in our ministry toolkits is exciting. Many of us are already exploring how it can help with brainstorming, creating training materials, and managing administrative tasks. We’ve learned what AI is and how to speak to it effectively. But the most important conversation isn't about what it can do, but about how we should use it.

How do we wield this powerful new tool in a way that truly honours God, serves our people well, and builds trust in our leadership?

This isn't just a technical question; it's a deep spiritual one. As leaders, we need a reliable framework. a compass to guide us.

Our True North: Grounding Ourselves in God’s Wisdom

Before we touch our keyboards, we must anchor ourselves in Scripture. Technology changes, but God’s word is eternal. The Apostle Paul gives us a powerful filter for all our thoughts and actions:

Philippians 4:8 (NIV): "Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is excellent or praiseworthy, think about such things."

This verse is our first ethical checkpoint. Is our use of AI true, noble, and right? And we're reminded where the wisdom to make that judgement comes from:

Proverbs 2:6 (NIV): "For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding."

Our wisdom comes from God, not an algorithm. With this as our foundation, we can now face the practical challenges of using AI in ministry.

Challenge 1: Spotting the Hidden Bias

One of the first ethical hurdles is understanding AI bias. AI learns by reading a massive portion of the internet, a digital library filled with human knowledge, but also human flaws. This data can contain hidden cultural, social, and even theological biases. When the AI learns from this, it can unintentionally repeat those biases.

The good news? Your personalised AI Profile is your most powerful shield against this. By telling the AI about your specific ministry context—your community, your values, and your audience of grassroots leaders in Africa, you actively filter out much of the irrelevant and culturally inappropriate noise.

However, even the best shield isn't perfect. We must still be discerning. Here are three simple checks to apply to any AI output:

  • Trust Your Gut: Does something feel "off" or misaligned with your spirit and experience? Pay attention to that feeling. It’s often the Holy Spirit’s prompting.
  • The Diversity Check: Does the information seem to favour one group or perspective? Is it inclusive of the diverse experiences within your community?
  • The "Common Sense" Check: Does this advice make practical sense for the people you serve every day on the ground?

Your Essential Tool: The Discernment Compass

This leads us to the most important truth: You are the expert. You are the spiritual leader, not the AI. It is a tool, not a replacement for your wisdom, your experience, and especially, the Holy Spirit's guidance.

Therefore, we must use our "Discernment Compass" to verify information:

  1. Scripture First: Always, always test any AI-generated biblical or theological insights against the Word of God itself. Use standard, well-recognised translations. As 1 Thessalonians 5:21 (NIV) commands, "Test everything. Hold on to the good."
  2. Trusted Sources: If AI provides facts, statistics, or historical claims, verify them with reliable sources like your denominational guidelines, respected Christian organisations, or academic journals.
  3. Local Wisdom: Never underestimate the power of your community. Consult with elders, fellow leaders, and mature believers. Their contextual wisdom is invaluable and something no AI can replicate.

10 Practical Principles for Keeping Ministry Human

Finally, how do we integrate this tool without losing the heart of our work? Ministry is about authentic relationships. Here are ten practical considerations, grouped into three themes, to guide your actions.

Theme 1: Guarding Your Ministry Integrity

  • Guard Authenticity: Ensure any AI-generated content truly reflects your voice, your heart, and the unique spirit of your ministry. Edit it thoroughly.
  • Protect Privacy: Be extremely cautious about sharing personal or sensitive information about individuals with AI tools.
  • Maintain Spiritual Discipline: Don't let AI shortcuts replace your personal, diligent study of the Word and your time in prayer.

Theme 2: Prioritising People & Connection

  • Prioritise Presence: Use AI to automate routine tasks to intentionally free up your time and energy to be with people.
  • Foster True Discipleship: AI can provide knowledge, but genuine transformation requires your personal investment and relational mentorship.
  • Enhance Connection: Leverage AI to organise events or create materials that build community, rather than allowing technology to create distance.

Theme 3: Stewarding Your Resources Wisely

  • Be Transparent: Consider being open with your team about how you're using AI. This fosters trust and understanding.
  • Steward Time & Energy: Use AI to manage administrative burdens, reallocating your most precious resources to high-touch, relational ministry.
  • Cultivate Critical Thought: Continuously engage with AI outputs using your God-given discernment. Human wisdom, guided by the Spirit, is irreplaceable.
  • Build Capacity, Not Dependency: Aim to use AI to empower yourself and others, ensuring you remain the ultimate leader, not the AI.

Your Next Step: A Call to Wise Action

Using AI ethically means being aware of its limits, actively verifying its outputs, and always prioritising people. The final responsibility for your ministry rests with you, the leader, guided by the Holy Spirit.

So, I want to leave you with a challenge. As always, I encourage you to "test the platform, fail, adapt, and try again."
